BALAYAGE
Balayage is a popular hair coloring technique that originated in France, derived from the French word "balayer," meaning "to sweep" or "to paint." Unlike traditional highlighting methods that use foils to create uniform, structured highlights, balayage involves a freehand application where the colorist hand-paints the dye or lightener onto specific sections of the hair. This creates a natural, sun-kissed look with soft, blended transitions between the base color and the highlights.
How the Balayage Technique Works:
Preparation: The process begins with dry, untangled hair. The colorist assesses your natural hair color, texture, and desired outcome to choose the appropriate lightener or dye shade. A consultation often helps determine how subtle or bold the highlights should be.
Sectioning: The hair is divided into manageable sections, typically starting from the bottom and working up. This allows for precise placement of color.
Application: Using a brush, the colorist applies the lightener or color in a sweeping motion, focusing on the mid-lengths to the ends of the hair. The product is applied more heavily toward the ends and feathered lightly upward to avoid harsh lines. Some stylists use a balayage board or their hand to support the hair during application, while others work entirely freehand. Unlike traditional highlights, foils are not typically used, allowing the color to process in the open air for a softer effect.
Blending: The key to balayage is seamless blending. The colorist may use varied brush strokes or slightly different amounts of product to create a gradient that mimics how hair naturally lightens in the sun—darker near the roots and progressively lighter toward the tips.
Processing: The lightener or dye processes for 25–45 minutes, depending on the desired lift and hair type. Since it’s an open-air technique, the processing time may differ from foil highlights.
Rinsing and Toning: Once the color has developed, the hair is rinsed thoroughly. A toner may be applied to refine the shade, neutralize unwanted tones (like brassiness), and enhance the natural look.
Aftercare: To maintain the vibrancy and health of balayage hair, color-safe shampoos, conditioners, and occasional toning treatments are recommended. The low-maintenance nature of balayage means touch-ups can often wait 12 weeks or longer, as regrowth blends naturally.
Why It’s a "System":
Balayage is considered a "system" because it’s a customizable, artistic process rather than a one-size-fits-all method. It combines preparation, strategic color placement, and blending techniques tailored to the individual’s hair type, length, and style preferences. The technique can be adapted for full balayage (all-over highlights), partial balayage (focused on specific areas like the face-framing "money pieces"), or even reverse balayage (adding darker lowlights for depth).
Benefits:
Natural Look: The hand-painted application avoids stark lines, giving a lived-in, effortless style.
Low Maintenance: Regrowth is less noticeable, making it ideal for those who don’t want frequent salon visits.
Versatility: Works on all hair colors (blonde, brunette, red, etc.), lengths, and textures.
GREY BLENDING
Gray blending is a hair coloring technique designed to seamlessly integrate gray hairs with the rest of the hair, creating a natural, low-maintenance look. It’s especially popular for those who want to embrace their grays while softening the contrast between gray and pigmented strands. Here’s how it typically works:
Assessment: The stylist evaluates the client’s hair—how much gray is present, its distribution (patchy or even), and the natural base color. This helps determine the blending approach.
Color Selection: Instead of fully covering the gray like traditional dyeing, the stylist chooses shades that complement both the gray and the natural color. This might include soft ash tones, muted blondes, or subtle browns. Often, a mix of lowlights (darker shades) and highlights (lighter shades) is used.
Application Techniques:
: For a gradual transition, the stylist applies a semi-permanent or demi-permanent dye in a shade close to the natural color over the gray areas. This tones down the starkness of the gray without fully hiding it.Highlights/Lowlights
Root Smudging: A soft, diffused color is applied at the roots and blended outward, blurring the line between gray and dyed hair for a seamless grow-out.
Precision Placement: The stylist targets specific sections—often around the crown or hairline where grays are most noticeable—ensuring the blending looks intentional and organic.
Toning: After coloring, a toner might be applied to neutralize unwanted warmth (like yellow or orange hues) and enhance the gray’s silvery or cool undertones, tying the look together.
The result is a sophisticated, lived-in style where the gray becomes part of the overall color palette rather than standing out. It’s ideal for those who want a subtle transition without frequent touch-ups, as the grow-out blends naturally with the gray roots.
LIVED-IN COLOR
The "lived-in" hair color technique is all about creating a natural, effortless look that feels like it’s been part of your hair for months—no harsh lines or obvious regrowth. It’s low-maintenance and designed to grow out beautifully, giving that perfectly imperfect, sun-kissed vibe. Here’s how it’s typically done:
Strategic Base Color: The stylist starts with a base color that’s close to your natural shade or a slightly softer version of it. This isn’t about full coverage but setting a foundation that complements your skin tone and existing hair.
Dimensional Highlights and Lowlights: The magic of lived-in color comes from adding subtle, blended highlights (lighter pieces) and lowlights (darker pieces). These are placed thoughtfully—often heavier around the face and ends, lighter toward the roots—to mimic how hair naturally lightens from sun exposure or time. Techniques like balayage (hand-painted color) or babylights (super-fine highlights) are key here.
Root Shadow or Smudging: To avoid a stark contrast as the hair grows, the stylist might apply a "root shadow"—a slightly darker shade at the roots that’s blended downward. This softens the transition between the base and the lighter pieces, making regrowth less noticeable.
Blended Ends: The ends often get a brighter pop of color, fading naturally into the mid-lengths. This gradient effect enhances that worn-in, beachy feel, like the hair’s been naturally lightened over time.
Toning for Harmony: After the color is applied, a toner is used to fine-tune the shades—think cool beiges, warm honeys, or soft ashes—ensuring everything melds together without looking too uniform or artificial.
The result? A soft, multidimensional color that looks organic, with no hard lines or heavy upkeep. It’s perfect for someone who wants a stylish yet relaxed look—think of it as hair that feels like it’s been lived in through a summer of adventures. Maintenance is usually just a refresh every 3-6 months, depending on how fast your hair grows.
FOLIAGE
"foilage" as a play on "foil" and "balayage." This is a hybrid coloring method that combines the precision of foil highlights with the freehand, natural effect of balayage. If you meant something different, feel free to clarify! Here’s how the foliage technique typically works, based on its common interpretation in the hair world:
Sectioning with Foils: The stylist starts by sectioning the hair and using foils, similar to traditional highlighting. The foils isolate specific strands, allowing for controlled lightening or color application. This gives the technique its structure and precision.
Balayage-Inspired Application: Within each foil, the color isn’t applied uniformly from root to tip like classic highlights. Instead, the stylist uses a balayage-style approach—hand-painting the lightener or dye in a sweeping motion. The color is concentrated more toward the mid-lengths and ends, leaving the roots softer or untouched for a natural fade.
Blended Gradient: The foils help amplify lift (lightening) where needed, but the freehand painting inside creates a seamless gradient. This avoids harsh lines and mimics how sunlight might naturally brighten hair, giving a "foliage"-like effect—think of dappled light filtering through leaves.
Custom Placement: The stylist strategically places the foiled sections—often around the face, crown, or ends—to frame the features or add dimension. The result feels organic, like the variegated colors of a forest canopy.
Toning for Depth: After processing, a toner is applied to refine the shades, adding richness or softness (e.g., caramel, ash, or taupe tones) to tie the look together and enhance that earthy, lived-in vibe.
The foliage technique delivers a multidimensional, low-maintenance color with more control than pure balayage but less rigidity than full foil highlights. It’s great for those who want a natural, sunlit look with subtle depth and texture—perfectly blending structure and freedom.

ELLIA SMITH - PRESIDENT/CEO
BOOK FREE CONSULTATION WITH MEHello & Welcome, I’m Ellia Smith, the proud owner of PHE SALON, where I’ve been transforming hair—and lives—with extensions for over 25 years. I’ve always believed that a good hairstyle can do wonders for confidence, and I love bringing that magic to my clients. At my salon, it’s not just about the hair; it’s about the experience. I enjoy sparking fun conversations, making everyone feel at ease, and even offering what I like to call a "free therapy session" with every appointment. Watching my clients leave with a smile and a boost of self-assurance is what drives me every day. To make things even easier, I’ve partnered with Affirm so folks can finance their extensions and pay over time—because everyone deserves to feel their best.
Outside the salon, I’m all about living life to the fullest. I love boating, creating art, entertaining friends, and soaking up good company. Years ago, I earned some judo medals back in Russia—proof I’ve got a competitive streak and a bit of grit! These days, my trusty sidekick is my micro bully, named Boss, who’s always at the salon, wagging his snubby tail and winning over customers. He’s practically part of the team.
I’m a driven person, and I’ve got big dreams. One of my proudest goals is to open a nonprofit organization to help women who’ve gone through chemotherapy. I want to provide them with hair extensions to help rebuild their confidence—it’s something close to my heart after seeing how much hair can mean to someone. For me, PHE SALON isn’t just a business; it’s a way to connect, uplift, and make a difference, one head of hair at a time.

I come from Bulgaria, and I’m obsessed with giving my clients the absolute best hair extensions in the industry. I’m fast—probably the fastest when it comes to installation and maintenance—but I never sacrifice quality. I love chatting with my clients, keeping the conversation flowing while I work my magic. It’s not just a job for me; it’s a passion.
I’ve got a math degree, and yeah, I’m kind of a genius with numbers, but I decided to trade equations for extensions. I wanted to express my artistic side, and the beauty industry was the perfect fit. My math background isn’t wasted, though—it teams up with my creativity to make sure every strand is spot-on, which is why I’m one of the best at what I do. Precision meets art, and I’m proud of that.
When I’m not at the salon, I’m usually jetting off somewhere exciting. I travel the world a few times a year—it’s my way of recharging and soaking up inspiration. I recently married my high school sweetheart, and we’re building a life together that’s as adventurous as it is grounded. Most people who meet me wouldn’t guess it, but I’m a total EDM fanatic. I live for those concerts, dancing to the beats and letting loose—it’s my wild side! At PHE SALON, I get to blend my skills, my story, and my love for making people feel amazing, one head of hair at a time.

Life’s a whirlwind for me. I’ve got two small kids and a husband, and I’m always on the go, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I pour most of my time into the salon and my amazing clients—they’re my priority. When I’m not there, though, I soak up every second with my family. Balancing it all keeps me energized.
I come from Russia, and that’s where I got some of the best training in the game.
